Motion passes; Environmentalists celebrate in the streets
The motion introduced by Stéphane Dion to reaffirm Canada’s support for Kyoto has passed in the House today, 161 – 115. This is a step forward in the right direction; repair Canada’s international reputation, after receiving a crucial damaging blow almost a year ago when the Harper government announced their intentions to withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol.
It is certain that Canadians have mixed feelings on climate change and the Kyoto Protocol; however, the majority has ruled in favour of the Kyoto Accord over the Conservatives’ made-in-Canada plan. (63% for Kyoto commitments, 30% for made-in-Canada plan; Source: Canadians Pick Kyoto Over New Environmental Plan, Angus Reid Global Monitor.)
It is clear that Stéphane Dion and the Liberals speak for the majority of Canadians across the country. The environment will be the key issue in the next election, I don’t think Steve has enough pixie dust in his accountability bag.

Good news. It also puts the right-wingers in a real bind, being out-voted like this. They also can’t claim by the poll results that their phony answer to global warming is supported.

The Kyoto scheme would bankrupt Canada, the Liberal Party of Montreal has no intention of honouring what they signed - that’s obvious. But it is not beneath them to use their failures to attack the Conservative government for strictly partisan purposes, it’s not like they ever worked in Canada’s interest before, why would they start now?

Larry,
Very good news indeed, in accordance with the polling data I pulled from Angus Reid it shows that the Liberal Party represents the majority of Canadians, hence why they’re the natural governing party of Canada. I’m pretty sure in the next election they’ll realize that we’ve been in the penalty box too long and the Conservatives are on the destruction path.
Philanthropist,
First, I don’t grasp why you’ve stated that Kyoto will bankrupt the country. I’d like to hear your opinions as to why. Second. It’s the Liberal Party of Canada.

I wonder if the Liberal Blog World that so supports “Kyoto” will ever come out and show that this international agreement is really about moving money from the industrialized world to the developing world. Does anyone even think that Canada and the West will reduce GHGs? Never! Dion and the rest of the opposition is dissembling. If the Liberals ever regain the goverment side of the House they will need to convince Canadians that it would be a good idea to send ‘carbon tax’ money to China or India when there are no effective checks and balances to ensure that there would be a concurrent reduction or elimination of GHG producing industry in their countries. I can’t see it ever happening.
Let’s start a debate about that. It’s all fine and dandy to say “I support Kyoto.” It’s another thing to send tax money to corrupt regiemes overseas!
I for one would be opposed to any one who suggested that Carbon Tax money should be spent on “buying” carbon permits issued by Beijing!

conservative friend,
True, the west will continue to pollute but I am positive that we can cut emissions by discovering new methods. I would like you to provide evidence to back your claims that Stéphane Dion plans on sending the carbon tax monies to a foreign nation. I’ve followed his leadership campaign and leadership closely, and I don’t remember him stating anything close to that.
